The 22nd annual Miss Chinese International Pageant was held at the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Hotel (China) on November 5, 2010. The 24 contestants coming from across the globe appeared in a wide selection of outfits competing for the Champion, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up, Miss Friendship, and Miss Home Beauty title. Despite the cold weather, the contestants appeared in sexy swimsuits on stage. Listed below are the pageant results.
Champion: Eliza Sam (Vancouver)
First Runner Up & Miss Home Beauty: Belle Theng (Kuala Lumpur)
Second Runner-Up: Candy Cheung (Toronto)
Miss Friendship: Bai Lu (Foshan)
The competition was much more fierce this year with the new voting system of announcing the order of the top three winners. Second Runner-Up was announced first and the remaining two contestants had to persuade the judges in determination for victory and defeat for the champion title. Eliza Sam won four-to-one votes with the support from judges Joe Ma, Liu Yang, Sonija Kwok, and Kate Tsui. The award winners will receive cash and prizes worth up to five million dollars in Yuen, breaking the record in history. HK representative Toby Chan was a favorite to win. However, her hard work didn’t pay off as Toby only ended up in top-six.
Eliza Sam (岑麗香) said that her win was unexpected, “I would like to thank everyone especially my supporters! (How did you win?) I’m not sure. Although, I did spend a lot of time learning Cantonese last year. I hope that I have improved. (What are your plans for the entertainment industry?) I would like to finish school first. My mom was here to support me tonight as well. (How about your boyfriend?) I don’t have a boyfriend! I wanted to concentrate better on school and the competition.”
(Were the results disappointing?) Belle Theng (陳美妤) said, “Absolutely not! I was very thankful when I got announced into top-twelve and swept along a side award. I had tried my best already. Eliza is intelligent and beautiful. I am not as cute as her.”
Toby Chan (陳庭欣) said in a non-disappointing manner, “It’s just a show. (HK representatives usually take a placement?) It’s not a guarantee! This proves that the competition is fair and just. (What was the reason of your lost?) Perhaps my smile.”
Speeches to the Judges
Belle Theng: “I am glad that the one standing beside me now is my roommate. It’s not easy for us, the 24 contestants to stand on this international stage. Therefore, may I kindly request for an applause? Thank you! The road ahead of me will not be easy to walk if I get crowned champion tonight. I might come across difficulties. However, I have the determination, confidence, and courage for success. I wish that you, judges would give me the chance and cast your vote on me. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the crew members for taking good care of me. Because of you guys, I sensed the warmth in a winter-weathered country. Without your help, this show wouldn’t have happened. Thanks to you all for coming here tonight. Thank you!”
Eliza Sam: “Judges, I have a few words that I would like to say to the audience. A year ago when I first mentioned about joining a pageant, people made fun of my silly thought. They would criticize fluency in Cantonese. I have worked hard learning [the language] this year; I would practice day and night. I am proud to say that I can stand here tonight, full of confidence, telling you all my inner feelings. I wish that all ladies out there, if you have a dream, please reach for it. Because if I can, so can you! Thanks!”
The new system of announcing top-12 and top-6 was rather refreshing. However, it made the results too obvious. Anyways, I didn’t sense much of the “grand” feeling from this year’s MCIP.
I was a supporter of Belle Theng since her Miss Astro days. Belle gave a very generous speech. However, if I were one of the judges, I would cast my vote on Eliza. Although Belle had a better performance, the regulation for this segment was to wash away all the previous points earned and judge for a champion based on their speech. I would judge for a winner not by what you came in with, but also how the pageant itself has influenced and improved you. The last line Eliza gave was very motivating.
